Venezuela: Conatel es el verdugo de los medios

Written by Human Rights Watch on 13 February 2014. Posted in Denuncias / Reports.

Venezuela must investigate demonstration deaths

Written by Amnesty International on 13 February 2014. Posted in Denuncias / Reports.

Authorities in Venezuela must urgently investigate the deaths of three people during protests yesterday, said Amnesty International.

“It is extremely concerning that violence has become a regular feature during protests in Venezuela. If the authorities are truly committed to preventing more deaths, they must ensure those responsible for the violence, demonstrators, security forces and armed civilians alike face justice,” said Guadalupe Marengo, Americas Deputy Director at Amnesty International.

“Protesters still held in detention must be charged with a crime or immediately released.”

According to reports, journalists were prevented from covering the protests. At least one TV channel is now believed to have been blocked.

“The Venezuelan authorities must show they are truly committed to respect people’s rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly by ensuring they can participate in protests without fear of being abused, detained or even killed. It is essential that journalists are allowed to report events freely and human right defenders are able to monitor demonstrations,” said Guadalupe Marengo

Cuba steps up repression on the eve of the CELAC summit

Written by AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL on 29 January 2014. Posted in Denuncias / Reports.

PRESS RELEASE, 27 January 2014

The Cuban authorities must halt their campaign of repression against opponents and dissidents and allow peaceful activities to take place during the second summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), Amnesty International said today.

The meeting will be held on 28 and 29 January in Havana.

“The attitude of the Cuban authorities is an outrageous attack on freedom of expression and assembly which should not go unnoticed by the many leaders now gathering in Havana,” Amnesty International’s Special Advisor for Regional Programmes, Javier Zúñiga, said.

“It is a futile attempt to silence those who speak out about the systematic violation of the rights to freedom of expression, assembly and demonstration in Cuba. The government may stop dissidents from getting near the conference but their voices will get through. There is nothing that can silence human rights.”

Last weekend in many parts of the island dozens of dissidents were arbitrarily detained or pressurized not to participate in private events scheduled to run parallel to the summit which begins tomorrow in Havana.

The Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation (CCDHRN, Comisión Cubana de Derechos Humanos y Reconciliación Nacional) has recorded 43 cases of people held for short periods between 23 and 26 January. Another five have been put under house arrest. At least 18 were warned by the authorities not to travel to Havana.

As a result of these arrests and the wave of intimidation, various meetings that were due to be held in parallel to the summit have been cancelled.

Christians killed for faith nearly doubled in 2013, group finds

Written by Fox News on 11 January 2014. Posted in Denuncias / Reports.

More than half of those reported killings (1,213) occurred in Syria, followed by Nigeria (612) and Pakistan (88). But North Korea remained the most dangerous country worldwide for Christians  Rev. Faye Pama Musa

Jan.10.─ Rev. Faye Pama Musa knew immediately why suspected Boko Haram militants burst into his home last year as his wife prepared dinner in the family’s northeastern Nigeria home. His stance against Christian persecution in the divided African nation had long made him a target.

Musa, who served as the general overseer of the Rhema Assembly International Church and secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Borno, saw the intruders near the front door of his home in Maiduguri as his wife, Mercy, prepped food. One of the couple’s daughters, Zion, had spotted the armed men just seconds earlier jumping a fence.

North Korea 'Publicly Executes 80 People for Watching South Korean TV Shows'

Written by International Business Times on 12 November 2013. Posted in Denuncias / Reports.

North Korean ruler orders public execution Seoul, Nov. 11.─ North Korea has publicly executed 80 people across seven cities for watching South Korean television shows, according to inside sources.

An unidentified source "familiar" with North Korean internal affairs told the conservative South Korean daily JoongAng Ilbo that the simultaneous executions took place on 3 November.

If confirmed, these are the first large-scale public executions under Kim Jong-un.

The report said the North Koreans were charged with relatively minor offences such as watching smuggled South Korean shows and pornography.
