Un merecido reconocimiento a Iván Acosta

Written by Gerardo E. Martínez-Solanas on 11 July 2023. Posted in Toma nota.../Take note....

Democracy, Dissent & Academic Freedom

Written by The Wire on 09 July 2023. Posted in Toma nota.../Take note....

Academic freedom is a moral and legal concept expressing the conviction that the freedom of inquiry by faculty members is essential to the mission of the academy as well as the principles of academia and that scholars should have the freedom to teach or communicate ideas or facts (including those that are inconvenient to external political groups or to authorities) without fear of repression, job loss, or imprisonment. Proponents of academic freedom believe that the freedom of inquiry by students and faculty members is essential to the mission of the academy.

Democracy Needs Dissenters, Critical Thinkers; but Academic freedom index Reveals Eroding Academic Freedom

Democracy thrives on DissentIn recent years, we have seen many such examples of the government intimidating the scholars working in the knowledge sector into silence. While academic freedom is being challenged, defamation lawsuits are becoming tools of harassment.

July 8.– In 2022, India’s academic freedom index was in the bottom 30% among 179 countries, according to an analysis by the V-Dem Institute. It flagged 22 countries, including India, China, the US, and Mexico, where institutes recorded a slide in academic freedom over the past decade.

Illegal immigration crisis seriously affecting the US

Written by Democracia Participativa on 06 July 2023. Posted in Toma nota.../Take note....

Horde of immigrants arriving at the southern border

The estimated official count of immigrants who had entered and remain illegally in the US until 2019 was 11,047,000, according to figures from the Migration Policy Institute. In January 2022, the Center for Immigration Studies put this number at 11,460,000. There are no more recent figures; only estimates which can be very inaccurate. However, according to NBC, a medium that usually defends the undocumented, in the fiscal year of 2022 it is estimated that 2,760,000 foreigners crossed the southern border illegally. And nearly a million more stayed in the US after entering legally with a tourist or a working visa. As of May 2023, the fiscal burden of providing essential services and benefits to illegal aliens costs American taxpayers nearly $151 billion each year.

United States: Record 853,955 Foreigners Overstay Legal Visas in Fiscal Year 2022

June 30.– More than two decades after Islamic terrorists exploited the U.S. government’s inefficient system for tracking foreigners who overstay visas, the problem is only getting worse with a startling 853,955 visa overstays in fiscal year 2022. A new report issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) tries to downplay the severity of the situation by shining a light on the positive, that the overstay rate is a mere 3.67% compared to 96.33% of over 23 million nonimmigrants that departed the country on time in accordance with the terms of their admission.

The reality is that the latest available overstay figure is an alarming record-breaker for the U.S. and it indicates that national security is not being taken seriously by the government. At least four of the September 11 hijackers were in the United States with expired visas and all these years later the government—under both Democratic and Republican administrations—has not found a way to track visa overstayers adequately.

25th anniversary of the collective complaints procedure under the European Social Charter

Written by Council of Europe on 03 July 2023. Posted in Toma nota.../Take note....

The European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR) monitors compliance with the Charter under two separate procedures:

  • through collective complaints lodged by the social partners and non-governmental organisations (collective complaints procedure)
  • and through reports drawn up by States parties (reporting procedure).

The collective complaints procedure was introduced by the Additional Protocol providing for a system of collective complaints adopted in 1995 and which entered into force in 1998.

Strasbourg, July 3.– On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the entry into force of the Additional Protocol to the European Social Charter Providing for a System of Collective Complaints (ETS No. 158) in 1998, the Department of Social Rights will host an event to discuss effective social rights protection in the European space on 6 July, at Strasbourg and online (2-6 pm).

The event will provide space for a diverse range of leading stakeholders (governments, social partners, civil society, academia, and other national and international bodies) to share their experiences, challenges, and good practices in using the collective complaints procedure to signal situations of possible non-implementation of the Charter in the countries concerned.

Opening remarks will be made by Deputy Secretary General Bjørn Berge, President of the Parliamentary Assembly Tiny Kox (tbc), Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović among other high level participants.

The event will be streamed live (in English and French) on the European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR) website and via the Council of Europe Facebook account.

Only Venezuela has a higher index of corruption than Bolivia in the Americas

Written by Democracia Participativa on 29 June 2023. Posted in Toma nota.../Take note....

The ability of the vast majority of Latin American countries to combat corruption continues to decline, with Venezuela, Bolivia, and Guatemala (in that order) experiencing the most deterioration as a reflection of the fragile state of democracy and lack of political will. The fifth edition of the Capacity to Combat Corruption Index (CCC) is an analytical tool that allows evaluating the capacity of the countries of the region to detect, punish and stop corruption. Countries with the highest scores (Uruguay with the highest ranking) are considered to be the most likely to prosecute and punish corrupt actors.

Stop corruption

Corruption = The "legacy" of Morales and Arce in Bolivia

Institutional devastation and corruption scandals: the dark legacy of MAS in Bolivia.

La Paz, June 28.– Only a few years ago, when Evo Morales was still in power, his government boasted of facts such as that Bolivia ranked first or second in terms of economic growth in the region, or of having one of the most 'guaranteed' constitutions. of rights in the world, but things have changed.

From the totalitarian point of view history is something to be created rather than learned. A totalitarian state is in effect a theocracy, and its ruling caste, in order to keep its position, has to be thought of as infallible.
