How Facebook Is Taking Over the World

Written by Time magazine on 17 June 2015. Posted in Navegando / Browsing....

Nearly 1 billion people use the service each day

Jun.17.─ Facebook is the undisputed leader among social networks. The company has a massive user base of more than 1.4 billion average monthly users, and it continues growing at an impressive speed considering the size of the platform. In addition to this leadership position in well established markets, Facebook is now even gaining ground in corners of the world where most consumers don’t even have access to good enough Internet connections.

The incredibly expanding social network

As of the first quarter of 2015, Facebook has 1.44 billion monthly active accounts, a year-over-year increase of 13% versus the same quarter in 2014. Daily active users stand at 936 million, growing 17% year over year during the last quarter. After victory for net neutrality in the US, the battle moves to Europe

Written by Glyn Moody on 14 April 2015. Posted in Navegando / Browsing....

Campaign urges the European parliament to save EU net neutrality.

The EU's net neutrality bill began as a 2013 proposal from the European Commission. It contained a number of major loopholes. In particular, it would have allowed "specialized services" that had privileged access to the Internet—and thus broke net neutrality. The proposal also explicitly allowed the discriminatory blocking of websites, applications, and content, a clear threat to freedom of expression in Europe.

Participatory Democracy’s Emerging Tools

Written by GovTech.com on 18 March 2015. Posted in Navegando / Browsing....

What started as groupware in the business world is providing better ways for governments to collaborate with citizens

Mar. 12.─ As we explore the role of new technologies in changing how government makes policies and delivers services, one form of technology is emerging that has the potential to foster decision-making that's not only more effective but also more legitimate: platforms for organizing communication by groups across a distance.

Long known as groupware in the business world, such tools now are either being adapted or purpose-built to facilitate conversation and collaboration between government and citizens with the goal of enabling democracy that is more participatory and inclusive of diverse voices.

Whether the goal is setting an agenda, brainstorming solutions, choosing a path forward and implementing it, or collaborating to assess what works, here are some examples of new tools for participatory democracy:
