In Philippines, recent joint military drills leave locals torn on US presence

Written by Christian Science Monitor on 18 June 2023. Posted in Headlines.

To protect its interests in the South China Sea, the Philippines must delicately balance its relationship with China and the United States. But the government’s eagerness to boost U.S. Navy ship on Balikatan military exercisesmilitary partnership has some Filipinos rethinking where that balance lies.

Subic, Philippines.– For years, fishing in the South China Sea has been both dangerous and difficult for Filipinos due to the increasing number of Chinese vessels encroaching on the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone – but recent military drills off the country’s western coast are giving some fisherfolk hope.

Leonildo Moralde, a commercial fisherman in Subic, Philippines, says access to the resource-rich lagoons and islets became harder under former President Rodrigo Duterte, who maintained a China-friendly posture throughout his term.

Council of Europe leaders profoundly concerned about Russia’s non-execution of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights

Written by Council of Europe on 09 June 2023. Posted in Headlines.

Russia is not complying with the Court's rulings, including the non-payment of just satisfaction

Strasbourg, June 08.– The Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers has reiterated the Russian Federation’s unconditional legal obligation to implement judgments of the European Court of Human Rights and to pay ‘just satisfaction’ awarded by the Court.

The President of the Committee of Ministers made a statement on this issue, and the Council of Europe Secretary General sent a further letter to the Russian Foreign Minister, following the Committee’s latest quarterly meeting on the execution of judgments from the European Court.

Four groups of Russian cases and two Georgia v. Russia interstate cases were examined by the Committee at the meeting. They concerned violations found in the Transdniestrian region of the Republic of Moldova and inadequate preparation of hostage-rescue operations resulting in loss of life and injuries in both the Dubrovka Theatre and in the hostage-taking crisis in Beslan in 2004, as well as criminal convictions based on an unfair trial and an arbitrary application of criminal law in cases concerning Aleksey Navalnyy.

Ukraine sends Western tanks into battle as counter-offensive gets underway

Assault with German-made Leopards is the first heavily armored attack of Kyiv’s summer push.

Last minute! 8 June 2023
17:00 EDT

The combat against Russian positions south of Zaporizhzhia included western-supplied tanks and armored vehicles and infantry backed by artillery. Ukrainian units were reported breaking through in the Orihiv-Tokmak sector, which blocks the route to the Russian-occupied city of Melitopol – a key objective for Kyiv. Intense fighting is taking place outside of the town of Tokmak, a key Russian logistical hub.

Kyiv, June 8.– Kyiv has committed German-made tanks into battle against Russian positions in south-eastern Ukraine, launching the first heavily armored assaults of its long-anticipated counter-offensive.

Two army personnel, two Western officials in Kyiv, and military analysts said the moves were a clear sign that, after months of preparations and training, Ukraine’s summer push to liberate occupied territory had begun in earnest.

UKRAINE – Where is the Nova Kajovka dam and what has happened to it?

Written by The Guardian on 07 June 2023. Posted in Headlines.

Kherson, June 6.– The dam is located upstream from the city of Kherson on the Dnipro River in southern Ukraine. Russia controls territory on the left bank of the river. The right bank is held by Ukraine.

The 2km-long dam has a road running along its top and is about 30 meters high. It powers the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant, a major energy producer, and holds back a reservoir containing 18 cubic km of water, which in turn feeds the north Crimea canal. The canal carries drinking water to Russian-occupied Crimea.

Has France lost its way in the Sahel?

Written by Le Monde diplomatique on 06 June 2023. Posted in Headlines.

The Sahel, which spans the continent from East to West, is a region that is being encroached upon by the sands of the Sahara desert.

France wants to achieve its ends mainly by defeating jihadists militarily, whereas local leaders want to secure political solutions through talks. Which looks a lot like a replay of old colonial-era dynamics.

June 6.– Operation Barkhane, launched in 2014, formally ended on 9 November 2022. But although France no longer has any troops in Mali, it still has nearly 3,000 military personnel in nearby Niger and Chad – as many as it did eight years ago. Refusing to admit defeat. it The Sahelcontinues to do battle in the Sahel with ill-defined enemies conveniently labeled ‘terrorists’. This is a war of indefinite duration. Its legal basis is unclear (and never discussed by politicians) and it uses opaque methods that France even plans to extend to neighbouring countries on the Gulf of Guinea.

‘Barkhane 2’, as it is sometimes known, is headquartered in Niger’s capital, Niamey, where France has drones and fighter jets and around 1,200 troops. Most of the military land vehicles have already been shipped back to France but the air component remains in place for surveillance and air strikes.
