How will Trudeau’s minority Parliament work? A brief guide to the new balance of power

Written by Democracia Participativa on 06 December 2019. Posted in Headlines.

The Trudeau Liberals emerged from the Oct. 21 election with too few seats to govern alone. The New Canadian Parliament 2019Here’s a primer on how minority rule could work with the Conservatives, Bloc, NDP and Greens, and what could happen next

Ottawa, Dec.6 (DP.net).– The 2019 Canadian federal election (formally the 43rd Canadian general election) was held on October 21, 2019, to elect members of the House of Commons to the 43rd Canadian Parliament.

The Liberal Party, led by incumbent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, won 157 seats to form a minority government and lost the majority they had won in the 2015 election. The Liberals lost the popular vote to the Conservatives, which marks only the second time in Canadian history that a governing party will form a government while receiving less than 35 per cent of the national popular vote. In spite of getting a higher popular vote at the national level, the Conservative Party only got 121 seats. A total of 170 votes are needed in Parliament to get a mojority.

The new Liberal minority government will face its first do-or-die vote by Dec. 10.

Written by Jordan Times on 30 November 2019. Posted in Headlines.

His Majesty warns against unilateral Israeli measures.

King Abdullah of Jordan Amman, Nov. 28.– His Majesty King Abdullah has warned that the continued absence of prospects for a just, comprehensive and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue, the Middle East’s central cause, threatens regional and global stability and security.

In a letter to Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People Cheikh Niang on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People marked annually on November 29, King Abdullah also warned that unilateral measures, including land appropriation and violation of international law and human rights, would only fuel conflict and frustration, thus empowering extremism, according to a Royal Court statement.

Nigeria: President Buhari and the survival of the All Progressives Congress

Written by The Nation (Nigeria) on 29 November 2019. Posted in Headlines.

It is the primary role of political parties in a participatory democracy to collate and channels views of the voters to government they install. The party therefore becomes the channel through which the electorates speak to their government.

President Muhammadu Buhari Abuja, Nov.28.– President Muhammadu Buhari during last Friday’s meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja charged the leaders of his party to work hard towards ensuring the party survives beyond his administration. History, he said would be unkind to the party leaders if the party collapses at the end of his administration. He went on to admonish the leading lights of the party to respect the wishes of their constituents who he said should not be taken for granted because “they know what they are doing”.

“The messenger”, as advocate marketers will say “is the message”. The truth is that if anyone has taken his party or Nigerian voters for granted, it is President Buhari who by his body language gives an impression he was doing the party that sponsored him for an elective office and Nigerians that voted him into office, a favour.

The bible makes a comeback in Bolivia with Jeanine Añez

Written by Open Democracy on 21 November 2019. Posted in Headlines.

The new interim president of Bolivia, replaces Evo Morales in a context of division and polarisation.  Jeanine Añez appears just after her investiture with a Bible in her hand

La Paz, Nov.20.– Until last week, Evo Morales was the longest standing Latin American political leader in recent decades. Now, due to pressure from Bolivia’s armed forces and the police, he has been forced to resign, and to flee to Mexico where he is currently taking refuge. Interim president Jeanine Áñez, Christian opposition politician who has expressed a desire to reform the Bolivian political system, has replaced him.

Protests for and against Bolivia’s ex-president Evo Morales erupted after the declaration of the Supreme Court on the 26th of October, when they announced that Morales was the winner of the latest presidential elections and therefore there was no need to hold a second round. Reports of electoral fraud from the Organisation of American States (OEA) later indicated that there were “serious irregularities” throughout.

Morales, who would be completing his fourth term in office as the first indigenous president of Latin America, became a transnational symbol of the indigenous fight against neoliberalism, racism and extractivism in the region.

During his time in office, Morales integrated indigenous and peasant sectors of the population into the political sphere, and he successfully resisted the US policy of eradication of coca crops defending its traditional and medicinal use by Bolivia’s indigenous communities.

However, he ended un opening the doors to the extractivism and also weakened the mechanisms that guarantee democracy in the country in order to extend his presidential mandate. He challenged the Constitution of Bolivia to allow him to run for a third term, when it had been laid out that the maximum term length was two ...
