Este es un ensayo teórico empírico sobre las condiciones de la revolución cubana y sus efectos y consecuencias. El autor procura reunir todas las teorías relacionadas con las causas del fenómeno social revolucionario, incluyendo a los principales protagonistas de este proceso que finalmente abrazan la teoría marxista-leninista. El ejemplo más connotado de este acercamiento es el propio Comandante Dr. Ernesto «Ché» Guevara, cuando expresa la teoría del «Foco Revolucionario» que es explicada en los contenidos de este libro.

El autor es un sociólogo guatemalteco, nacido en La Habana, antiguo funcionario de la Secretaría de Naciones Unidas y actual Director del Instituto para el Desarrollo Sostenible, de la Universidad Galileo.

En la Introducción, el autor señala que: "En la primera parte de este estudio, analizaremos los presupuestos marxistas para la ocurrencia de una revolución. Intentaremos ser fieles al pensamiento original, para luego probar y someter sus afirmaciones a la realidad de Cuba." Y añade: "Posteriormente, y de acuerdo a los resultados de esa investigación, enunciamos un intento de explicación, que pudiera abocar aquellos aspectos contemplados por la explicación marxista, así como también, eliminar aquellos que no resistieran la contratación con los datos empíricos de la realidad misma".

Hay en esta obra un certero análisis antropológico de las realidades económica, social y política que fomentaron las condiciones necesarias de un proceso que ha tenido una asombrosa y desproporcionada trascendencia mundial. Se aparta de otras obras que, como señala en su introducción: "adolecen de una carga valorativa tal, que es imposible discernir al final, entre la realidad y la ideología, entre lo que sucedió realmente y lo que quieren hacer creer que sucedió de acuerdo a esquemas preconcebidos".

Después de analizar diversas teorías en boga durante los dos últimos siglos, aboga la obra por una "reingeniería necesaria" que rescate a un país que ha sufrido un daño antropológico tan profundo, considerando la economía social de mercado, la solidaridad, la subsidiariedad y una franca orientación destinada a fomentar el bien común y el progreso como elementos necesarios de un futuro de bienestar y confraternidad.

Efectivamente, no ha sido escrito para satisfacer los análisis, los esquemas ni las aspiraciones de la derecha, el centro o la izquierda, sino para poner los puntos sobre la íes.

He shows that any conception of human rights―and the idea of human rights itself―is historically specific and contingent. Since publication of the first edition in 1989, Universal Human Rights in Theory and Practice has justified Donnelly’s claim that "conceptual clarity, the fruit of sound theory, can facilitate action. At the very least it can help to unmask the arguments of dictators and their allies."

The book works well as an introduction to the validity of human rights, the vocabulary of practitioners and some of the founding documents, particularly, in this case, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations in 1948. An important aspect of the UDHR is that all the rights it enumerates and defines are individual and not group rights. The rights of ethnic, religious or linguistic minorities are dealt with as the rights of individuals belonging to the group, not the group itself as a collective entity, since human rights are literally the rights that one has simply because on is a human being. Human rights are equal rights; all people have the same human rights as everyone else. They are inalienable; one cannot stop being human no matter how badly one behaves or how monstrously one is treated. And they are universal in that we consider all members of the species Homo Sapiens as human beings and thus, automatically, holders of human rights.

An important distinction for Donnelly is that human rights are not moral rights--human rights have played what he calls a "vanishingly small part of Western moral theory." He follows John Rawls in identifying them as political rights and is much more specific regarding them than Jurgen Habermas.

It's also a good reference book, one that you'll return to time and time again.
