'Erasing history': Russia shuts down human rights group Memorial International

Written by Reuters on 29 December 2021. Posted in Headlines.

  • The Supreme Court ruled that Memorial International, which chronicled political repression in Russia, must be liquidated. Russian Memorial International locked

Moscow, Dec.28 (Reuters).– Russia's Supreme Court ordered the country's oldest human rights group to disband on Tuesday for breaking a law requiring it to act as "a foreign agent", capping a year of crackdowns on Kremlin critics unseen since the Soviet era.

The closure of Memorial International bookmarks a year in which Alexei Navalny, the Kremlin's top critic, was jailed, his movement banned and many of his allies forced to flee. Moscow says it is simply enforcing laws to thwart extremism and shield the country from what it says is malign foreign influence.

Taliban 'Tribal Version': Shari'a is not the Same Everywhere

Written by GANDHARA on 23 December 2021. Posted in Headlines.

Judge, Jury, And Executioner: Taliban Brings Afghanistan’s Justice System Under Its Thumb. {click to open}

When the Taliban-led government says it is implementing Islamic law in Afghanistan, it is referring to its own strict Sunni interpretation of Shari'a.

There is no universal Islamic law, because Shari'a is open to different interpretations among the five main schools of Islamic jurisprudence: four Sunni schools of thought and a Shi'ite school.

The surprising truth behind the US illegal trade

Written by Miami Herald on 18 December 2021. Posted in Headlines.

Miami, Dic. 18.– Illegal trade is a growing threat to our national security and impacts everyInspection at the airport law-abiding American. It fuels the 2.2 trillion dollar-a-year industry of transnational crime. It empowers criminal organizations to steal money from businesses and governments.

The criminals who engage in illegal trade are cunning and violent and commit murder to hold and expand their illicit markets. Operating with such impunity enables these groups to fund their operations and establish and sustain trade routes for trafficking across the country. They are nimble enough to avoid law enforcement, enterprising enough to continually establish new revenue streams, and are dynamic in the execution of their criminal enterprises.

Muslim Rebels target Christians in the Central African Republic

Written by Democracia Participativa on 17 December 2021. Posted in Headlines.

70% of the 5 million Central African Republic population identifies as Christian, including 34% Catholics and 30% Evangelical Christians. The remainder 30% of the populace are predominantly Sunni Muslims with many still practicing animistic tribal beliefs.

Bangui, Dec. 17 (DP.net).– Christians who actively share their faith suffer intense violence at the hands of Muslim rebels. Central African Republic rebels

A coalition of Islamic rebel groups –known as Seleka– operating from the northern part of the Country succeeded in 2013 in ousting the Central African Republic president, but soon splintered into multiple groups with differing agendas. However, they have regrouped and added other groups who were not part of the coup.

They are raping women, burning people alive and, in general, pursuing Christians and killing as many as they could. For many Christians, survival is still a struggle inside the Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps where some 600,000 persons live.

Juan Bautista Alberdi
