President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marin published a joint statement on Finland’s NATO membership on Thursday morning.

Helsinki, May 12.– “Finland must apply for NATO membership without delay,” a joint statement by Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marin (the SDP) declares on Thursday morning.

According to the statement, NATO membership would strengthen Finland’s security. As a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defense alliance.

Attacks in Transnistria Spark Tensions and Increase Risk of Escalation

The autonomous, pro-Russian region of Transnistria is being targeted by an organized attempt from an unknown source to destabilize the area.

Chișinău, May 3.– Several attacks took place last week in Moldova. The incidents are concentrated in the separatist region of Transnistria, precisely in the cities of Tiraspol, Parcani, Maiac and Cobasna. Transnistria is a de facto autonomous pro-Russian “state”. De iure, it is a region of Moldavia, and no country in the West backs its independence.

Nonetheless, Russia has taken the Transnistrian quest for self-determination very seriously, deploying more than a thousand troops in its territory and concretely retaining control of law and order. Checkpoints are in place at the borders (also the internal one with Moldova) and a self-proclaimed president administers the region from the local capital of Tiraspol.

Conference On The Future Of Europe: The Dress Of Participatory Democracy

Strasbourg, May 2.– Participants from 27 member states and union bodies met in the European Parliament for this purpose.

The Conference on the Future of Europe is a unique and timely opportunity for European citizens to debate on Europe’s challenges and priorities. No matter where you are from or what you do, this is the place to think about what future you want for the European Union.

The European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission have committed to listen to Europeans and to follow up, within their sphere of competences, on the recommendations made. 

By spring 2022, the Conference is expected to reach conclusions and provide guidance on the future of Europe.

Who can take part?

European citizens, from all walks of life and corners of the Union, with young people playing a central role in shaping the future of the European project. 

European, national, regional and local authorities, as well as civil society and other organisations who want to organise events and contribute ideas.

Ghana mapPresident Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says he will work to forge broad national consensus on the direct popular election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCE’S), to deepen democracy and accountability.

Accra, May 1.– In a nationally televised address on Thursday to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the referendum that approved Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, he emphasized that the modification of Article 55(3) of the document, which bars political parties from involvement in district assembly elections, would improve the quality of local governance.

The President noted that one primary goal of the 1992 Constitution was to decentralize the structure of governance in Ghana, so that government would be brought closer to the people.

Council of Europe logo Apr.29.– With the aim to contribute to raising awareness and capacity development in civil participation standards and tools of the Council of Europe, academy on participatory democracy was organised for local authorities and civil society representatives of Kvemo Kartli Region in Kachreti, Georgia.

The Regional Academy was led by Council of Europe international and local experts, and was held as part of the Council of Europe Project “Strengthening Participatory Democracy and Human Rights at Local Level in Georgia”.
