I have been thinking about the preference for a blow being better than a treacherous kiss.
I know a young man who composes music, and he has allowed me to borrow one of his phrases: “I prefer to be struck with the truth than to be kissed with a lie.”
It ought to be placed as a dedication in our Constitution—not only to cleanse so many years of deceit and falsehood, but also as a warning to the governments that may come in the future.
Because we have been filled with lies; we are fed up with so much deception.
They told us that this Revolution would be green like the palm trees, when the shackles of Marxist ideology were already prepared and we had already been sold to Soviet imperialism.
They told us that this Revolution was “of the humble and for the humble,” when in reality it became the perfect means for the enrichment and unlimited power of a few and their untouchable families, while the humble were pushed into misery and abandonment.
They told us that the Revolution would never abandon its children, while those children who raised their voices to defend the truth were first sent to the firing squad and later to prison, and the rest of the children were submerged in ideological slavery and in an increasingly harsh life.
Lies in speeches, lies on television, lies on the radio, in the press, in the meetings of the CDR, at workplaces, in schools… lies, lies, lies… handed out like warm kisses.
And now, do not tell me that the ordinary Cuban does not go hungry, does not suffer and die for lack of medicines, or that the lives of the elderly are guaranteed, that the education in our schools is of quality, that hospitals can provide proper care to the sick… because it is a lie.
Do not tell me that this people are still “revolutionary,” and that those who publicly demonstrate asking for freedom and a change of system are antisocial and violent people… because it is a lie.
Do not tell me that there is no repression, that there is no police harassment, that there is no intimidation of citizens who dissent… because it is a lie.
Do not tell me that Human Rights are respected in Cuba, that there are no political prisoners, that the young men of “4tico” are detained because they are a danger to society, that the crackdown against the boys of “Fuera de la caja” and their families is because they incite hatred and violence… because it is a lie.
Do not tell me that the demands of university students are directed by American imperialism… because it is a lie.
Do not tell me that the embargo is to blame for everything, because not only is it a lie, it is also an insult to our intelligence.
And do not tell me that this Government cares about the people. Do not tell me that they only need us to give them more time. Do not encourage me again to practice “creative resistance.” Do not repeat that “now we will finally build socialism.” Do not ask me to trust and hand over another seventy years of this people’s life. Do not swear to me that the situation will soon be fixed—because it is a lie.
Because the only thing that can save this people—besides faith in Jesus Christ—is that those who govern us today finally leave, and that there be a total, absolute, and radical change of the political system for one that truly defends freedom and democracy.
A system that chooses to tell the truth, even if it is harsh, even if we feel it like a blow—because that blow will always be preferable to the tender kiss that ultimately sends us to suffering and to a cross that does not save.
I have been thinking about the preference for a blow being better than a treacherous kiss.
