The Assuring the Future of Tibet Act (AFTA) has just been introduced in the U.S. Senate (S.5362), representing a big step forward for Tibet.
Introduced by Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Jim Risch (R-ID), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Todd Young (R-IN), Tim Kaine (D-VA), and Rick Scott (R-FL)—a broad bipartisan coalition of legislators—AFTA has support from both sides of the aisle in the U.S. Senate and follows the bipartisan introduction of AFTA in the U.S. House of Representatives (H.R. 8982) earlier this year.
Please, add your name to our petition to Congress calling on your legislators to support the Assuring the Future of Tibet Act and make a difference for Tibet now. AFTA acknowledges a fundamental principle: the future of Tibet cannot be decided without the Tibetan people.
If passed, this legislation would strengthen US support for the Tibetan people and their democratically elected leadership. It would make it U.S. policy to maintain direct engagement with the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) in Dharamsala, India—the democratic voice of the Tibetan people inside Tibet and across the global diaspora.
It would also affirm support for Tibetans’ fundamental human rights, including their right to self-determination, and direct the U.S. government to advocate for the CTA to receive observer status within the United Nations.
At a time when China is accelerating its campaign to erase Tibetan identity, this legislation sends a powerful message. But Members of Congress need to hear from you to know how important this issue is. Please, join us and raise your voice for Tibet today?
