Alert in Latin America: US and nine other countries denounce Iran's "lethal plans" in this hemisphere

The signatory countries are Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, United States of America, and Trinidad and Tobago. The statement recalls that the United States and Paraguay hosted an anti-terrorism forum last month (CTTF).

Former connections between Iran and the Hezbollah movement with the governments of Venezuela and Bolivia was also a focus of attention.

Washington DC, Oct. 9.— The United States, Canada and eight other Latin American and Caribbean countries warned last Monday in a joint statement  of "lethal plans" and "malign influence operations" by Iran and its proxy forces —such as HAMAS and Hezbollah— in the Latin American and Caribbean region in the Western Hemisphere.

The statement recalls that the United States and Paraguay hosted an anti-terrorism forum last month (CTTF), and notes that the ten signatory countries now wish to condemn "terrorist actions and other malign influence operations in our hemisphere carried out by Iran and its terrorist proxies."

Key Accusations

  • Lethal plotting: Backing hostile and violent operations across the region.
  • Illicit fundraising: Engaging in financial networks that support state-sponsored actions.
  • Political interference: Conducting foreign influence operations and coercing perceived adversaries.
  • Compromising processes: Interfering with legal and administrative systems to weaken regional security.

Pledged Actions

  • Enhanced coordination: Strengthening intelligence-sharing and law enforcement cooperation among member states.
  • Future measures: Committing to additional joint actions to halt proxy networks and counter Iranian influence in the hemisphere

This formal declaration highlights Washington's ongoing initiative to forge a wider regional coalition designed to confront suspected Iranian and proxy operations outside the Middle East theatre.
