Elian braved the dangerous waters between the island and Florida in order to reach the US to obtain colon cancer treatment that Cuban health services cannot provide.
Miami, Marzo 25 (DP.net).– The US Coast Guard rescued Elian López, a Cuban migrant who sailed from Cuba on a windsurfing board and approached Florida on 22 March 2022, desperate to seek cancer treatment.
Elian López, 48, set out from the Cuban resort town of Varadero, where he was a diving instructor, on Tuesday, according to officials.
His wife contacted their relatives in Miami to inform them that her parched husband was lost at sea, ABC television company WPLG reported.
Family members in Miami who were aware of his journey alerted the US Coast Guard, which rescued the man on Wednesday, 15 miles south of Islamorada in the Florida Keys.
Mr. López was equipped with a life jacket, GPS system, and multiple cell phones, which aided in the rescue, according to officials.
Cubans have used every possible means to escape from a regime that keeps them in misery and under cruel domination. For more than 60 years, Cubans desperate for their hardship and misery have spread to more than 130 countries around the world seeking refuge and aspiring to a better future. Several million have emigrated for political or economic reasons. To many of them, the regime denies their right to return, not even to visit their relatives.
