Los firmantes declaran su deseo de una transición pacífica y ordenada hacia la democracia como única solución viable a la crisis en Cuba y apoyan compromisos específicos para propulsarla a partir de un gobierno provisional. El texto solo esboza puntos esenciales que serían parte de un complejo proceso de transición y llama a un debate nacional sobre cómo efectuarlo, así como a coordinar estrategias y concertar voluntades por el bien del pueblo cubano.
La misiva denota madurez cívica y política en la oposición cubana. Ha sido suscrita desde Cuba y otros 16 países por un diverso y significativo grupo que incluye muchas figuras emblemáticas de la lucha por los derechos humanos desde muy diversos campos y posturas políticas. Algunos han firmado como líderes o activistas de más de 50 organizaciones. Se incluyen abogados, artistas, científicos, cineastas, clérigos, empresarios, escritores, economistas, ex altos militares cubanos, ex presos políticos, médicos, músicos, periodistas, profesores universitarios de diversas ramas, sindicalistas y otros.
El documento es fruto de un ejercicio no institucional que no se adjudica a grupo alguno. Se inspiró en valiosos esfuerzos anteriores y actuales sobre transición y cohesión sociopolítica por una Cuba libre. El texto fue consultado y modificado con el aporte de un valioso número de participantes antes de ser difundido a un mayor número de reconocidos opositores, que en su gran mayoría lo ha suscrito.
La petición virtual permitirá a cubanos en todo el mundo suscribir el mensaje. Ésta inicialmente logró varios cientos de firmas con el texto completo de 1332 palabras. Con el fin de reducir el tiempo de lectura y considerando que la conexión es difícil y costosa dentro de Cuba, la petición —que mantiene todos los puntos esenciales del documento original— fue acortada para poder facilitar su circulación. Opositores y activistas de derechos humanos podrán continuar aportando su apoyo al documento completo.
La organización sin fines de lucro Archivo Cuba avala que el documento es fruto de un esfuerzo colegiado legítimo y está facilitando la recogida de las firmas de apoyo.

Notable members of Cuban civil society agree
to create a path for a transition to democracy

Cuba Libre: Civic Commitment for a Transition to Democracy,” (

) which is also gathering signatures as an online petition.
The signatories declare their hope for a peaceful and orderly transition towards democracy as the only viable solution to the crisis in Cuba, and they support specific commitments to drive a provisional government. The text only outlines essential points that would be part of a complex process of transition, and it calls for a national debate about how to conduct the process, as well as to coordinate strategies and make every effort to cooperate for the good of the Cuban people.
The letter embodies civic and political maturity in the Cuban opposition. It has been signed in Cuba and 16 other countries by a diverse and significant group that includes emblematic figures in the struggle for human rights from diverse fields and political positions. The list includes leaders and activists from over 50 organizations, artists, clergymen, economists, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, former high-ranking members of the military, former political prisoners, journalists, lawyers, musicians, physicians, scientists, union leaders, university professors, and writers.
The document is the outcome of a non-institutional exercise that is not claimed by any one group. It was inspired by valuable current and previous efforts to sociopolitical cohesion toward a free Cuba. The text was written and modified by a significant number of participants before being shared with a larger number of well-known opponents, the majority of whom have signed it.
The online petition will allow Cubans throughout the world to co-sign the message. It gathered several hundreds of signatures with a complete text of 1,332 words. In order to reduce reading time, and considering that an internet connection is costly and difficult to obtain within Cuba, the petition —which maintains all the essential points of the original document— was shortened to facilitate and accelerate its circulation. Political opponents and human rights activists will be able to continue to support the entire document in a publicly recognized way.
The non-profit organization Archivo Cuba attests that this document is the product of a legitimate, collegial effort, and is facilitating the gathering of signatures in support of it.
