United Nations, Sept.20.– Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset will stress the importance of a renewed international commitment to human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in strengthening global security at the UN General Assembly High-level Week 2025.
During the week, Secretary General Berset will contribute to several high-level discussions, including the Meeting to Commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the 4th World Conference on Women.
The Secretary General will also give a keynote address at Columbia University’s World Leaders Forum, on “The Age of Democratic Security”: Democracy. Memory. Multilateralism. Accountability. Words that once defined the postwar order — now dismissed as elitist, or dead. In his first U.S. address, Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset challenges a world where democracy is seen as weakness, truth as opinion, and justice as optional.
In addition, he will take part in a series of bilateral meetings with heads of state, government leaders, and senior officials from Council of Europe member and non-member states, the United Nations, and other international organisations.
