Missouri redistricting referendum dispute heads to court

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV).– A legal dispute over Missouri residents’ right to challenge new legislative maps through referendum is heading to court, with both sides citing different interpretations of the state constitution.

Secretary of State Denny Hoskins claims the state’s constitution doesn’t mention the right to referendum. But attorney Chuck Hatfield for People Not Politicians said otherwise.

Hatfield highlighted Article Three, Section 49 and 52A, which states that a referendum can happen for an act of the General Assembly, which is in House Bill One’s title. The attorney also stated there’s judicial precedent that affirms residents’ constitutional right to challenge the government.
