The new Commander-in-Chief, 58-year-old Oleksandr Stanislavovych Syrskyi is a Moscow Military Academy graduate who has commanded Ukraine’s Ground Forces since 2019.
Kyiv, Feb. 10.– In a much anticipated and highly significant decision, Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has sacked the popular Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces right ahead of the second anniversary of Russia’s all-out attack on the embattled pro-Western nation. 
On Thursday, Zelensky announced he had replaced General Valery Zaluzhny (photo: right) with Col. General Oleksandr Syrskyi (photo: left).
Zaluzhny, 50, became the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in July 2021, several months before Putin’s Russia invaded the country from three sides in February 2022.
Relations between the president and the top commander had deteriorated in recent months as Zaluzhny had insisted on a more cautious approach to dealing with the Russian invaders.
