Stand up for a Democratic Europe

With Brexit, the British showed the red card to the EU. Europe is now in its deepest crisis. But we will not let the EU break apart – we want a democratic relaunch.

Die EU was the answer to two horrific world wars. It brought peace, democracy and solidarity. But the current political elites have failed to govern in the public good. This cannot go on. We need a democratic relaunch of Europe to bring it much closer to the people.

For this we need a constitutional EU-Convention to discuss the future of Europe and to implement the urgent reforms. Citizens, civil society and parliaments of all countries must be included. And all European citizens should vote on the new EU constitution.

The only way forward in Europe is to launch a constitutional debate to lay new foundations for real democracy in the EU.

We therefore call for an EU Convention, according to Article 48 of the Lisbon Treaty, to discuss a democratic reform of the EU. The Convention process must be democratic, transparent and participatory, and its results should be presented to all citizens in a pan-European referendum.

This will ensure that citizens are actively involved in a fundamental discussion about the future of Europe, and that citizens themselves legitimise a new Constitution for Europe.

It is time to open up a debate that includes all Europeans.

We want a democratic Europe – NOW!
