Romanian police briefly detained election front-runner Călin Georgescu for questioning

The winner of Romania's first round of presidential election, was annulled as a candidate by the Constitutional Court on 6 December 2024

Bucharest, Feb.28 (DPnet).– After his appearance at the General Prosecutor's Office on 26 February, Romanian news channel Antena 3 CNN reported Călin Georgescu is being questioned in connection with the financing of his election campaign last year. Georgescu was indicted on six counts and put under judicial control for 60 days, which allows him to walk free but not to leave the country, according to Romanian media reports.

In a surprising turn of events, Călin Georgescu, a previously unknown far-right populist candidate, emerged victorious in the first round of Romania's presidential election, defeating the incumbent Prime Minister. This unexpected outcome led to a runoff against reformist Elena Lasconi of the Save Romania Union party.

However, the election was annulled by a top court due to allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference. Georgescu’s questions came after prosecutors searched the premises of his close associates, including mercenary leader Horațiu Potra and Georgescu’s bodyguard. Subsequently, Romanian prosecutors launched a criminal investigation against Georgescu for election campaign funding abuses and other offenses.

The announcement of the investigation covering a number of separate accusations took place after Georgescu, 62, was stopped by police in Bucharest traffic on Wednesday, the 26th of February, the day on which – according to his team on social media – he planned to submit his candidacy for a rerun of the election, which is scheduled for May.

The new election is scheduled to be held on May 4, with a runoff planned two weeks later on May 18.
