The Speaker of the US Congress Mike Johnson, R-La, has rightly declared today that the budget proposal passed in the Senate, "It’s a joke!" But more than a joke it is an abuse of power aimed at pushing an agenda that leaves the government paralyzed. The apparent goal is to create a "failure" that can be exploited to gain seats in November and secure a majority in the Legislative Branch.
In the protracted fight to pass the budget on the (Big and Beautiful Bill Act), in a troubling turn of events, the Senate voted last night to reinstate funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), despite Senate Democrats blocking DHS funding six times along 6 weeks of sterile debates. The government experienced a partial shutdown for 42 days, leaving the American people exposed, frustrated, and vulnerable. The bill that passed in the Senate funds all of DHS except for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Thankfully, House Republicans, under the leadership of Speaker Thompson, are resolute in their commitment to secure full funding for DHS, standing up for the safety and security of the American people.
The Democrats' intransigence is not a budget dispute, but a deliberate political confrontation that threatens the security of all Americans enough to provoke a turnaround in favor of the Democrats in November.
In a recent interview, Representative Robert Aderholt reminded Americans of a threat that is often overlooked: "Our cybersecurity is also under National Security, and our cybersecurity is not up to standard because we don’t have enough people there now to try to make sure that our cyberspace is safe in this country."
With rising tensions abroad and experts warning about hostile actors and sleeper cells in the United States, a weakened Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is not something our country can afford, whether for 40 days or even 40 minutes. The Coast Guard, FEMA, and our cyber defenses are all impacted by the Democrats' obstruction. Senate Democrats are aware of this; they have blocked the full funding of DHS six times and are currently attempting to defund national security.
