We hereby formally request a rectification of the information in the article "Cuba beeft onder de dreiging van VS, terwijl economie op instorten 88"/ "Cuba trembles under the threat of the U.S. while the economy teeters on the verge of collapse" published on January 17, 2026, by Boris van der Spek, NOS correspondent for Latin America, in which false and inaccurate statements are disseminated that negatively affect a group of Cubans belonging to the political opposition.
In particular, the assertion that there is no opposition in Cuba is particularly serious, since this assertion is not only false, but also has direct and dangerous consequences for people who, within the island, exercise political, social or civic activism in conditions of high risk.
Denying the existence of the Cuban opposition leaves those who take daily risks unprotected, makes their work invisible, and legitimizes the regime's official narrative, which presents opponents and political prisoners as common criminals or criminals, with the aim of justifying criminal sentences of several years in prison, arbitrary detentions, permanent surveillance, and other forms of repression.
In the Cuban context, such statements can:

In the Cuban context, such statements can:
- Facilitate the criminalization of political dissent,
- Increase the risk of reprisals, persecution and criminal punishment against activists and their families,
- Contribute to the international stigmatization of victims of repression,
- And to reinforce a discourse that denies fundamental rights such as freedom of expression, association and political participation.
In accordance with the right of rectification (Section 6:167 of the Burgerlijk Wetboek), we request that:
- incorrect information is corrected, or
- a clear, precise and visible rectification is published, with a scope equivalent to that of the original article.
Sincerely,
