Prominent anti-corruption researcher, Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu of Azerbaijan, was attacked and arbitrarily arrested by authorities

On July 23, 2023, world-renowned economist and scholar Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu of Dr. Gubad IbadoghluDr. Gubad IbadoghluAzerbaijan was arrested. Dr. Ibadoghlu and his wife, Irada Bayramova, were brutally attacked outside Baku, Azerbaijan. Twenty people, dressed in civilian clothes, rammed into the car the couple was driving and proceeded to beat them both publicly. Both were then taken into police custody, with Irada Bayramova released later that day. Since then, the Azerbaijani authorities have charged Dr. Ibadoghlu with a variety of crimes, including counterfeiting money and accused him of working with an organization connected to Fethullah Gülen, who the Turkish government considers a terrorist. Dr. Ibadoghlu remains in custody with unreliable access to his diabetes medication and limited contact with his lawyer. His current pretrial detention is set to last for four months, with current charges potentially resulting in a maximum of 12 years of prison.

The charges against Dr. Ibadoghlu are spurious and his detention is meant to silence activities the regime believes threatens its kleptocratic holdings and to send a chilling message to Azerbaijan’s already fragile civil society and independent media.

Dr. Ibadoghlu serves as the chairman of the Azerbaijan Democracy and Prosperity Movement, which was formed in 2014, but has been refused official status as a political party by the Azerbaijani government. Notably, in June 2023, he announced the formation of the Azerbaijani Youth Education Foundation in the UK, an organization meant to support the creation of a new generation of Azerbaijani professionals.

The World Movement for Democracy joins the growing international call for the immediate release of Dr. Ibadoghlu.

California AB 1352 WOULD PROVIDE FOR REMOVAL OF ELECTED SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEES WHO REJECT RADICAL INDOCTRINATION

This bill introduced by Mia Bonta (D) and presently assigned to the California Senate Education Mia BontaMia BontaCommittee would provide the option for the governing board of a school district to censure or remove a duly elected member from office by a ⅔ vote if the member prevents the board from “conducting its business” or contradicts “inclusive policies, practices, and curriculums.” The bill is clearly targeted at removing school board trustees who oppose politicization and children indoctrination in their schools.

The plight of Tibet under brutal Chinese rule

Under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the Beijing government is wiping out all elements of Tibetan culture. From deeply held religious beliefs to Tibetan native language, history, and artistic traditions dating back thousands of years.

In particular, in January 2018, Human Rights Watch reported that Chinese government officials were coordinating a “takeover” of the important Tibetan Buddhist monastery at Larung Gar. In a move to assert greater control and Tibetan monastery being dismantledbolster its surveillance of religious activities, the government has been demolishing a number of monastery buildings, and placing atheist Communist party officials in important administrative positions. The move appears to more closely align with a long history of religious restrictions targeting the practice and institutions of Tibetan Buddhism.

Nevertheless, the fact is that Tibetans, including the Dalai Lama and the President-in-exile Tencho Gyatso, have expressed their willingness to negotiate a union deal with China if their traditions, religion, and way of life are respected. This has been stated despite the unfortunate example of what is happening in Hong Kong, where the promises of the Chinese government before the annexation have turned out to be totally empty.
