10 US states add campaign-finance laws after a US Supreme Court ruling

Washington, July 24.┴ Ten states have swiftly passed new laws requiring additional disclosure of political spending, following a Supreme Court ruling that lets corporations and unions pump unlimited amounts of money into certain campaign commercials.

The push in states comes as a high-profile effort in Congress to blunt the court's January ruling has stalled in the Senate amid strong opposition by Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. The Senate inaction has cast doubts that any new federal disclosure rules will be in place before November's midterm House and Senate elections.

Venezuela Severs Diplomatic Ties With Colombia

Venezuela Severs Diplomatic Ties With Colombia
Caracas, July 22.— President Hugo Chavez severed Venezuela's diplomatic relations with Colombia on Thursday over claims he harbors guerrillas, and he warned that his neighbor's leader could attempt to provoke a war.

Chavez said he was forced to break off all relations because Colombian officials claim he has failed to act against leftist rebels who allegedly have taken shelter in Venezuelan territory.

He acted moments after Colombian Ambassador Luis Alfonso Hoyos presented a meeting of the Organization of American States in Washington with photos, videos, witness testimony and maps of what he said were rebel camps inside Venezuela and challenged Venezuelan officials to let independent observers visit them.

Australian Prime Minister to call snap election

July 17 (Reuters).─ The Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, is expected to call an election today, taking advantage of a rebound in support for her Labor party – narrowly ahead in opinion polls – and a robust economy.

Australia's first woman prime minister is expected to call an August 28 poll, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation said, giving voters stark choices over a new mine tax and climate policy but little difference in economic management. "I'm not engaging in election speculation," she told reporters yesterday, but media pundits expect her to call anAugust 21 or 28 poll today or next weekend.

"But whenever the election is called, there will be a very clear choice about whether Australia moves forward or back," she said. Ms Gillard's office declined to comment on the ABC report, but news outlets said Labor staff had been told to man campaign headquarters this weekend.

INDIA: Troopers killed by Maoists had limbs chopped off

[ See Video ]

Raipur, Jul. 2.─ A doctor who performed autopsies of the 26 security personnel killed in a Maoist ambush in Chhattisgargh on Tuesday, said that at least 10 men had their hands and legs chopped off and throats slit.

"All the 26 bodies were bullet-ridden, but we found some 10 bodies with heads smashed, legs and hands chopped off and throats slit. These extreme brutalities were surely committed after the men fell to Maoist bullets," one of the doctors who carried out the autopsy said yesterday.

At least 24 troopers of the 39th battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), one state policeman and a special police officer (SPO) were massacred on Tuesday.  Comentarios 80 hits

German Presidential Vote: Christian Wulff's three-round victory

German Presidential Vote: Christian Wulff's three-round victory It was meant to be a quick and jubilant election victory for Angela Merkel’s government. But instead it was a slow and unsteady success for the Chancellor and Christian Wulff'Democracy is alive and works!, said candidate Joachim Gauck

Berlin, Jul.1 (Reuters).─ At 12pm the delegates gathered in the Bundestag’s plenary room to begin voting to decide who would be the next President of Germany, a largely ceremonial but nonetheless important role. Previous incumbent Horst Köhler stepped down in May.

Annalena expressed absolute certainty in her father’s ability: “He’ll do it, and he’ll do it well.” Wulff himself was more carefully optimistic: “I’m rather confident that I will succeed in becoming the tenth President.”

But success came slower than expected.

Russia's caveats are self-defeating

Russia's caveats are self-defeating

In a country where the concepts of democracy and freedom are limited, progress is not possible

Jul.2.─ Prime Minister Vladimir Putin insists that "Without normal democratic development Russia will have no future". We Russians are pleased to hear these enlightened words, yet Putin adds a "but" to his argument, which weakens it considerably. In fact, Putin's "but" renders his points senseless.

We have hated this "but," this coordinating conjunction, ever since the dawn of the Soviet era. Then we were told that freedom is good, but that one can't live in an individualist society without common concern for the communist state. Democracy is great, but only in the interests of the working class.

Now Russia's prime minister tells us that democracy is indeed great, but that public protests cannot take place in public places, say, around hospitals and the like. Never mind that the Russian Constitution does not list hospitals among places forbidden for public assembly, or that sick people need democracy, too.

Russian President Dmitri Medvedev does understand — with no "buts" — that "freedom is better than not freedom", that "legal nihilism" is bad and democracy is good. He understands that Stalin was a criminal, that his order to murder Polish officers in Katyn was an act of depravity that has no excuse or explanation.
