Ago.24.- El Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Infancia (Unicef) ha señalado este lunes que unas 150.000 personas han abandonado sus hogares en Yemen por la violencia generada con los recientes combates entre el ejército y los seguidores del clérigo Hussein al Houthi, asesinado hace tres años por las tropas yemeníes.

 

Esta agencia de la ONU afirmó haber enviado varios cargamentos de víveres, como mantas, bidones de agua, elementos básicos de higiene y utensilios de cocina para la población más vulnerable de Yemen y expresó su preocupación por la situación de los niños y las mujeres.

El portavoz de Unicef, Naseem ur Rehman, indicó que "Unicef, el Programa Mundial de Alimentos (PMA) y el Alto Comisionado de la ONU para los Refugiados (Acnur) han levantado un campamento para este nuevo flujo de desplazados. Son como beduinos". Agregó que la mayoría proviene del distrito de Al Dahar y que es la primera vez que dejan sus casas, donde estas personas y sus antepasados han vivido durante siglos.

... esta crisis amenaza con agravar la ya difícil situación de los niños en Yemen, pues un 46% de los menores de cinco años tiene una tasa de nutrición inferior a la normal y el 53% sufre de retraso en el crecimiento.

Annual Reports on Religious Freedom

The Department of State submits these reports to Congress in compliance with Section 102(b) of the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) of 1998. They have been issued annually for 10 years. The law provides that the Secretary of State, with the assistance of the Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, shall transmit to Congress "an Annual Report on International Religious Freedom supplementing the most recent Human Rights Reports by providing additional detailed information with respect to matters involving international religious freedom." Both reports are available to the public (click on the titles below) and institutions may get free hard copies if requested.

2009 Annual Report on International Religious Freedom

The 2009 Report  was introduced to the public on October 26 and records the status of respect for religious freedom in all countries for the 12 months ended on June 30, 2009. The Annual Report's primary focus is on the actions of governments, including those that contribute to religious repression or tolerate violence against religious minorities as well as those that protect and promote religious freedom. Each country report contains sections covering the country's religious demography; government respect for religious freedom (including the legal and policy framework, restrictions on religious freedom, abuses of religious freedom, and improvements and positive developments); societal respect for religious freedom; and U.S. Government policy and actions.

2008 Annual Report on International Religious Freedom

US Secretary of State, introduced to the public on September 19 this Annual Report covering the 12 months ended on 20 June 2008.  This work supplements the most recent Human Rights Reports by providing additional detailed information with respect to matters involving international religious freedom, including individual country chapters on the status of religious freedom worldwide.  According to the Report, the IRF Act requires «the designation of countries that have "engaged in or tolerated particularly severe violations of religious freedom" during the reporting period».
