• The Greens and the European Free Alliance will have an open conference in the European Parliament on 29 June 2011
•  Democracy International will follow with a related Conference in the abbey of Kortenberg, Brussels (photo) on 30 June 2011

 Brussels, May 18 (DP.net).─ The European Citizens' Initiative is the first transnational instrument for citizens' participation worldwide. Citizens can make use of it from April 2012 on. This conference will provide information, training, and network opportunities for those who intend to launch an initiative. [See Conference agenda] 

Democracy International will offer dinner on June 29 and will meet all day 30 June in order to:

• Formally approve new association statutes for DI
• Elect DI's first permanent executive board
• Learn about DI's current ongoing projects
• Identify additional issues and projects for DI's future work

Participants will meet and hear from some of the most inspiring thinkers on direct and participatory democracy, including special guests Andi Gross (Swiss Delegation to the Council of Europe) and Joe Matthews (New America Foundation). They will have chances to share both the most pressing problems and the most promising opportunities for strengthening direct and participatory democracy at all levels of government.
